1996 Honda Odyssey malfunction indicator light

1996 Honda Odyssey, 4 cyl, 150,000 mileage. Malfunction indicator light came on, immediately started rough idling in slow traffic and stop lights, like it wants to stall.

What can I do first to spot check potential problems to emissions control systems before taking it to repair shop? Will changing spark plugs, air filter, anything else help out, what to do? I'm in last year grad school, can't afford ANY bills!

If it is running rough and has never been tuned up, now is the time. Complex problems are difficult to fix when the basics arent good. Sounds like a miss, tune up may just fix it
