My check engine lite is on. I tested it and the read out is that it is the crankshaft speed sensor intermittent fluctuations. What are some of the likely causes of that? Bad sensor is obviously one, but what else might I be looking at?
How difficult is the sensor to get at? Could a reasonably competent backyard mechanic do it?

Crankshaft speed sensor is located behind the crankshaft pulley. It is about a 3hr operation to R&R this sensor. The timing covers must come off as well as all the accessory belts and crank pulley.

Other possibilities would be a loose connection in the circuit. So have a good look at the harness for any exposed wires before replacing the part.
