Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Honda Civic 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual
i.6i SR equivalent to USDM Honda Civic EX Coupe, D16Y8 engine with vtec.

I am not sure that engine mechanical is the right category. The engine light comes on when I accelerate hard, it goes off when I switch off the engine and does not come back on until the next time I accelerate hard again. My car is a UK market, 1998 Honda civic 1.6i SR, it doesn't seem to have an OBDII port so I am not sure how to diagnose the problem. Even with the light on the car seems to run fine and is very good on gas. Sometimes when I am driving I smell something like exhause inside the car, could this be related? I also changed the engine sensor when I bought the car because the engine light was always on.

I'll tell him where the service connector is.

On the passenger side kick panel (so to the right of where the passengers feet would be) there is a panel with two plastic fasteners holding it in. Remove the panel and in a green rubber holder there will be a two wire plug, one brown and one black. The clip itself will be blue. WITH THE CAR OFF, insert either a 2pin connector clip, or loop a thin enough piece of wire into both holes on the connector. Back in the driver's seat, turn the key to the 'ON' position. The CEL light will come on at startup, like normal, but it will then begin to flash.
**By counting the number of flashes, you can decipher the CEL #.
SHORT flashes are single digits (1/2 second)
LONG flashes are 10's (1 second)

Report back with the code and I will tell you how to test the circuit and/or replace it
