1997 Honda Civic Emissions/Engine?

For the past 3 weeks, there is a sputtering coming from the engine. It sounds like an exhaust leak somewhere in the engine. Today when cold starting the check engine light came on and the sputtering became more severe. However after a quick stop and then restart, there was no sputtering (check engine light still on). Any thoughts on where to start? Thanks
