I just noticed my speedometer sometimes does not work when I first start driving but will often start working after a few miles. Is this the speed sensor, cable or the actual speedometer gauge unit? Yes, 14 year old car with 75k miles.

Hi rnash9,

It most likely is the Vehicle Speed Sensor located on top of the trans axle housing below the thermostat housing.

Thank you, I don't want to have to replace all three items, but a failed speed sensor after 75k miles? I thought they lasted longer but it isn't too expensive to replace it. Thankls again for the reply.

The VSS is an electronic component and it can fail anytime, not by the mileage but the age.
