Electrical problem
1996 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

please help. I have a 96 civic. My problem is hard to explain but here goes. While driving it seems to misfire and sometime get stuck at a certain speed. My RPMs will drop and then if I slam on the gas the car doesnt accelerate. It is also having troubling staying on while stopped. When I start my car without my foot on the gas the RPMs will go up and down and then eventually the car just turns off. This happens at red lights also-- I will be sitting there with the brakes on and the car will just turn off.

Hi mike86201,

There seem to be 2 problems from the description.
1. Faulty O2 sensor. This would result in the loss of throttle response when accelerating.
2. Idle system is not functioning properly. It could be related to the bad O2 sensor. I would suggest cleaning the throttle body and Intake Air Control valve.

Is the Check Engine Lamp showing?
