Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual n/a miles

engine-D15b8-1.5sohc non v-etc. Let me start by saying I only drive this car to work and back. 14.8 miles one way, mostly highway miles. Starts fine when its cold, if I go to the store down the street and the engine is warm and I stop for gas /coffee it's fine. Now, when I get off the highway my car will idle low and latley even shut off and not turn back on. It has idled low before for awhile and even turn off but Ive never had a problem starting it back up. It's now left me about three times and I think the longest has been 15 minutes. I have been making it by keeping on the gas to compensate. If I stop at a gas staion after the highway then it probably won't start. When on the highway I keep it in 5th gear pretty steady at 2.5rpm(speedometer broke) I used to do 3-4rpm until it started doing this. Sorry to write so much but I wanted to give you as much background as possible. I was thinking it might be the fuel pump but I'm not sure. Thanks

Hi Rybread68,

The more info you provide, the easier it is for us to understand the problem and come up with a solution in the shortest time possible.

From the description of the symptoms, I believe the PGM-FI main relay is the cause.

When engine could not be started, does the Check Engine Light stay on and did not go off after 2 seconds of the ignition switch being turned ON?

When ignition switch is turned, do you hear the fuel pump running?

If YES and NO to above, check the PGM-FI main relay. It is known to intermittently cause non starting.

Remove the relay and check the circuit board for bad or cracked solders. Resoldering them works.

I cant hear the fuel pump because the fan turns on with the ignition, I also noticed it shaking as I keep the rpms above 1rpm, when I'm sitting at a lite and have seen small amounts of smoke(I believe it was white) but only acouple times so don't think it's a headgasket but thats why I wrote in here lol. I will be checking that main relay in a few when I get the chance, thanks.
