1989 Honda Accord Cruise control

My cruise control only works from time to time. When it does work, it automatically shuts itself off without me hitting the brakes or anything. What would cause this?

Check and see if there is too much free in between the brake pedal and switch, the stopper tends to get worn resulting in inconsistent operation of the switch. While driving, try using a foot to lift the brake pedal and see if the cruise works properly.
