I have been given a 1981 Honda accord that was diagnosed to need a valve job by a local repair shop that had been doing the maintenance on this car for years. This car has been sitting in a garage for 5 years without being run. While doing a visual inspection before attempting to start it, I noticed 3 loose ball bearings inside the distributor cap just "floating around". Can anyone think of a reason for them being there?

Very small or large? Is there a lot of play in the distributor?

They were probably about 1/16" or 3/32" diameter and the distributor seems to be O.K. I just can't imagine how or why they would be there. It just seems like they would have to be put there on purpose.

My guess is they have dropped from some bearing inside the distributor. The problem will manifest itself eventually. I would remove them.
