Whenever I start my engine the rpm's shoot up to 2000 plus. When I put it into drive it wants to drive by itself. And when I need to stop my car it has problems shifting down which it seems to force itself into a lower gear, this seems to push my car forward instead of stopping.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks and checked the coolant temperature sensor yet? Also, have you checked for codes in the computer yet?

I took my car to a mechanic and they checked for vacuum leaks and did a basic diagnostic on it. The coolant temperature sensor is working. Could it be a transmission issue?

No not with a high idle how did they check the coolant temp sensor? Also did they check for codes? It's really common for the pcv hoses to collapse and leak vacuum on that engine. Also when they built the engines they wrinkled the intake gaskets around the number one cylinder right by the power steering pump. Over time they develop vacuum leaks. They couldn't find anything wrong?

I solved the problem. The valve Cover Gasket wasnt properly sealing. I removed it and replaced it with a new one.

You must have fixed a vacuum leak in the process as well.
