Heater problems, car occasionally running hot

Sometimes when I turn my heater on, it blows cold air. When it blows cold air the temperature gauge quickly jumps to 3/4 of the way hot and sometimes to almost hot. My water pump was just changed and there is collant, its full. When the heater is off, the temperature gauge stays in the middle.

It sounds like either you are low on coolant or there is an air pocket in the system. Have you tried bleeding the air from the cooling system? Has this problem started since the water pump was replaced?

Step 1 - A heater cannot operate unless the engine is full of coolant/antifreeze. If coolant level is low check the system for leaks.
