I had my Harmonic balancer replaced yesterday, January 28, 2023. It drove great on the way home except for a slight vibration at idle while vehicle is in drive and stopped at a light or sign but, if it was in park the vibration wasn't really there. It has done that since we got the vehicle in March of 2021 though. Well, today as soon as I cranked the car there was a scraping noise. I don't want to say grinding because grinding noise to me means loud and intense noise. It sounded almost like someone was taking sand paper and sliding it across a table or something. Also, every few seconds it'll squeak a little. Please help me. It is my only form of transportation and I have no one to get a ride from.

Hi,

Can you tell approximately where the sound is coming from? The harmonic balancer/crank pulley is at the lowest point of the engine. It is what turns the serpentine belt.

Do me a favor. Open the hood and start the engine. See if you hear the noise coming from the serpentine belt area. I attached a pic of the part below for you. The pic has a tool attached. Something may be touching it or another component as it turns.

Also, if it is loud enough, record it and upload it for me to hear. If you are hearing a squeak as well, it certainly sounds like it could be related to the serpentine belt. If they didn't fully seat the harmonic balancer, the pulley may not be fully aligned with the other pullies.

Let me know.

Joe

It is definitely coming from that general area. This is the thing. I also forgot to mention the check engine light was on and flashing when it wasn't before he worked on it. I know that means it needs immediate attention. I do a lot of my own work on my car, but I wasn't comfortable replacing the crank pulley myself because I haven't done it before. My dad is a heavy machinery and diesel mechanic. I grew up under the hood of all types of vehicles, but my dad and I don't see or speak to each other so definitely couldn't get help from him. I hired a local mechanic who was also a mobile mechanic. Checked reviews but it wasn't many because he's just starting his business is what I was told. All were 5 stars but only 2 actually wrote something. All was fine but I kept getting calls from him talking about need this replaced need that replaced etc. Well, most of the stuff he named off I literally had just recently done in the last 3 to 4 months. I don't mean to offend anyone by saying this but he was one of those who saw a female and automatically assumed he could pull a fast one. Well, when I called his bluff he was pretty upset. At this point he had already been well into the process, so I thought I'd let bygones be bygones and let him finish the job. Because it's my only vehicle and I have to drop my son off and pick him up from school every day and other necessary things that require me to drive. I got the call it was ready. I went to get it and he acted pretty strange and very A**holeish towards me, so I just kept it short and sweet, checked everything out, made sure it drove good etc. All was good, or so I thought.
About an hour later I got a call saying I needed to come back because I left my bag that kept my lock but and tire tools and that he thought he left the bolt off the pulley because he saw a bolt in the bag. He took the thing off so I know he knew exactly what the bolt looked like, but I knew the bolt that was in the bag bas the bolt that secures my spare tire in, and they look absolutely nothing alike. I just hung up in him because I knew then I had screwed up big time. But the car was running okay. Even drive it 15 min up the road and back a few times and it was fine. So, I just kept telling myself it's fine. It's fixed and I didn't make the worst decision ever. But my fears came true. So I popped the hood looked listened and smelt a strange smell as well thats hard to explain what it smelt like exactly. It was Almost like burning gear oil a little. So I checked the oil again because he said he had to add some to it because it was real low. When I pulled the dipstick out the oil was so thin and runny it just kinda dripped off like water and had a smell There's so much to explain that I'm struggling type it. If you want to email, or maybe some type of video chat it may be easier for me to explain.

Here's the video but I believe I see the wabble. I'm pretty sure they're not aligned properly. I hope that's what it is anyways.

Hi,

The belt is making noise for sure. Also, I didn't realize the engine light was flashing. When that happens, it indicates a misfire is occurring.

The crankshaft position sensor is located at the harmonic balancer. That is what I have a feeling is causing the light and noise.

You really should take it back and have them look at it. Let them know about the engine light flashing and that you feel something has happened with the crankshaft position sensor.

Let me know your thoughts.

Take care,

Joe
