I was driving home on day from work and a ticking noise started under the hood. It almost sounds like a rod nocking but I still get the same performance and my oil pressure is the same and no smoke from the exhaust. I took it to a local mechanic and he gave me a estimate for 3000.00 to change the camshaft all the lifters and rods. Also to change the timing chain and the cylinder head and gasket. He said it sounded like a collapsed lifter? If it is a lifter or rod why does he need to change everything else? Is it possible to just change out the rods and lifters without changing all the other stuff on this type of vehicle.(2002 yukon 5.3L V8 2wheel drive)

You should be able to change the pushrods and lifters without removing the heads and what-not, however, there are some cases where you do have to remove the heads to get the lifters out. Poor design characteristics, but some manufacturers don't really care about the maintenance part, just the selling part :) Sounds like you could put a new engine in the vehicle for around that, may cost a bit more for a complete setup, or if you can pull the motor and take it somewhere to be rebuilt, that may be your best bet.
