Hi I was driving down the road and heard this knocking noise in the engine the truck was running fine and had no check engine lights on then all of a sudden the check engine light comes on and within 3 seconds after that the truck shuts off. I checked oil level it was fine I had changed it a couple of weeks prior I tried to start the truck again and it started fine the knocking was still there worse this time. I had the vehicle towed and the (shady) mechanic said the engine was blown. I just wanted to know if this was even possible the truck has just 60K on it I have never plowed with it or abused it and I have owned it for less than a year and put about 10K on it.
4.8 Ltr vortec I would not even think it was possible to kill an engine that young

Before doing to much I would get another opinion or do the work yourself. With that said I would first remove the serpintine drive belt and then start it (don't let it run to long as the water pump will not be turning) and see if the noise is still there. What this will do is eliminate it from being the Alt or the power steering pump or water pump ETC. So do this first then get back to me with what you find. Let me know if the noise is still there.
