Transmission problem (limp mode?)

I have a 1991 Olds Cutlass International. My daughter rocked it back and forth to get out of a snow bank. Driving down the road afterward the transmission stopped, pulling to the side of the road and putting the car in park and then back into gear did nothing. Shutting off the car and starting it again would allow me to drive about 1 or 2 miles but would not shift out of 2nd gear. A mechanic told me this was limp? Mode and the cure for my problems is to replace the transmission. The car isn't worth the 800 to 1200 to do that. Another mechanic thought it might be as simple as changing the oil filter. What do you think. The car has 126000 miles on it.
