I have a 1992 pontiac firebird with 140,000 it has a loud knocking noise coming from the motor at first I thought it was a tap it but as I pressed the gas pedal
and the engine started to rasie rpm's the knocking
nosie gets worse and it also starts make a clanking nosie.I think it might the main engine bearings. So it would be helpful if u could tell how to change a camshaft. Or if u know what the problem is I would love for ur answer. Rite now I have to ride my friends bike to work.I have a 1968 elcamino but I still have to get the 400 trans rebuilt for it. Well thanks. Bye

Hello, from what you have described I wouldn't rule out a bad set of rod bearings. Does it get stronger as your motor warms up and the oil thins down a bit?
I had something like this happen a couple of years ago and had the rod bearings go so bad the crank was wasted. Can't swear this is your problem but really worth checking out, I think. Me, I would get the camino on the road then worry about the firebird but I'm die-hard chevy! Happy wrenching and lotsa luck :)

If your driving the bird and you give it gas and the car starts to shimmy and knock badly. Good chance it's a camshaft. But not to rule other things out.

Your talking about a pretty serious job. If your not sure where to start this one, I'm wonderring if you should be thinking of tackling it yourself. There are things you'll have to know like how much to torque down your rocker arms and other stuff.
