1959 Other GMC Models genarator trouble shooting

How can I determine if the genarator is charging properly other than by the battery going dead. The truck has a gauge which appears to be right on zero perhaps a tad on the negative side. The truck has a new battery. The truck is a gmc 100 1954.

If its on the neg side that means while its running the battery is discharging, indicating generator or wiring.
