I have a 1996 GMC jimmy. It cranks over but will not start. I have changed the spark plugs, distributer cap, ignition coil, battery, fuel filter and fuel pump. Fuel is getting to the engine. Some times not often it will start after some time and it runs fine, then if I turn it off it start up instantly but when I try to start it a few hours later or the next day it wont start at all. What will cause the engine fail to start?

You need to determine what is missing. Spark? Fuel? Timing/compression? Or any combination of the three.

When it is cranking and not starting, check for sprak with a spark tester. You can shoot some carb cleaner into the throttle and see if a lack of fuel is present ( assuming it is only a lack of fuel.) PRessure test the fuel system when it isn't starting for spec. ( The fuel pump connector should have been replaced when doing the pump. Was it?

There may be a lack of signal from a crankshaft sensor happening. But you need to confrm what is lacking before testing further.
