Getting a smell out

I went out to eat and I had leftover fish and the bag leaked on the carpet of my car. It is all wet and it has a very strong odor of fish. Is this something that I can get out myself or is it best left for professionals at a car wash to take out? I am not even sure who I trust because my local car wash is far from perfect. Would they be able to remove the smell with basic ease or is it more difficult? I really don't know what to do. I am not sure if I can take it out but I do not really trust my local car wash to do a god job unless it is fairly easy. Any advice? I would leave it to the car wash if this is something that they can shampoo out with ease. If it is difficult it might be better done myself. So I would be happy to get any suggestions.

I think you are oversimplifying this whole problem. There are not a whole lot of ways to get that smell out. Most of them would involve bleach and that would ruin the carpet anyway. At the very least, the carpet has to be removed from the car and pressure cleaned but I have doubts if that will even be good enough. You will probably need a new carpet.

Well, I am not really sure about that. This morning (the wetness had dried) the smell was mostly gone, even when the area was touched, it did not pass to my hand. The detail manager still suggested shampooing it as he said it could smell if put in the path of hot, direct sunlight. Driving back home I did not smell anything. Should I be okay from here forward?

Apparently you did not get too much fish juice into the carpet. That is not easy to get rid of once it soaks down into the padding.
