how do i find out what lightbulb to use for the light that is on the shifter to tell which gear my 1996 Geo Prism?

Take the console apart and pull the bulb, which yoiu will have to do anyway.
Then go to the auto parts store and get a new one. You can drive it with the console apart, just looks like heck.
You can also look at the owners manual, or get a Haynes manual for your year for instructions to disassemble the console.
