How do you change the front struts on a 95 Geo Prizm? Is this something a backyard mechanic could do?

Taking them off is not a hard job, but taking the spring off is dangerous unless you have a quality spring compressor.
You will also most likely lose your camber alignment even if you scribe the knuckle.
You can remove them and have the spring removed at a shop and save a few bucks.

They are held in place at the top by 3 bolts (DO NOT REMOVE THE LARGE CENTER BOLT) and at knuckle by two large bolts, there may be a brake line clip that has to be removed.

The spring is under great tension, it can cause severe damage if not properly compresed and removed.
