Engine Performance problem
1965 Ford Truck V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 65' ford 351 Windsor engine that has been sitting for about a year now. I got it running, rebuilt the 600 Holley, set the timing where the previous owner had the marks on the balancer( 4-6 bdc I believe) drained the old fuel out and put fresh in. It starts right up, got it to idle ok, but when I gas on it, it seems to run ok but it pings quite a bit. Tried adjusting the timing out on the road and it either runs poorly or it will die when I gas it. I don't know much about the specs on the engine as thr guy told me it was a Cleveland, checked it out and it is a Windsor. Any suggestions would be very helpful. It has the stock distributor setup with vac. Advance which seems to be working. Thank's, Tim

I used to set the timing on these with a helper, put helper in car, have him hold the brake, put in drive give it about 2000-2500 rpm and you set the timing till it pings, then back of just a touch, works every time, now get a can of combustion chamber cleaner at GM parts, follow directions on the can, this will remove the carbon build up in cylinders. Also check dwell of the points, dwell will affect timing! Dont recall exact spec but I believe its 28-30 degrees!
