I was driving down the highway averaging 60 to 65 mpg. I stopped at a fruit stand but when I started up I heard what sounded like a broken rod. I drove it about a half a mile and noticed a engine charge like on. I looked under the hood and saw that the engine was running but the serpertine belt was not turning. Now did I miss something because I thought if the timing chain was broken I could not drive the car. I limped home on battery power and stopping to let the engine cool down. What is the problem?

Timing belt and serpentine belt are two different things, your serpentine belt snapped, and the car will still run but your water pump and power steering will be effected, your water pump will no longer be turned, therefore your car will overheat, and your steering wheel will stiffen up. If it is being powered by one serpentine belt, because the power steering pump is not being turned. I just hope you did not warp a head gasket because you drove the car while overheating. Replace the belt and you should be fine. Did the belt snap or did it come off?

Thank you for the answer. That is the question. I thought it was the serpertine belt because of the original being old so I changed it out there on the highway. So new belt does like the old one. It is not turning the accessories. I drove it home, stopping frequently to cool the engine but starting and running with battery power. I bearly made it with no cranking power left.

So if the new belt is not turning the accessories, then you will have to look to see which one its not turning and then replace that part. Its probably the water pump.
