I have a 1993 ford tempo GL with over 100, 00 miles, the question I have is that my catalytic converter starts smoking and starts glowing orange. And there is a claping sound when the engine is at idle, also when I drive it dosnt seem to speed up and the whole engine starts shaking which I think it might be an engine mount.

When was the last complete tuneup? Is the vacuum line to the MAP sensor intact? It sits on the left shock tower.
Raw fuel entering the converter can cause red overheat! You may be running to rich or a cylinder is not firing? Do a google search on red hot cat converter! See what pops?
