2001 Ford Taurus 161000 miles 3.0 engine. Just had cam synchronizer replaced almost 2 weeks ago. Today while driving with the a/c on a strong smell of gasoline was in the car for about 30 seconds. Also when shifting from park to drive and vice versa the shift is very hard and loud. Once it's in park and I take my foot off the brake, the car surges forward. What' happening?

I would address the fuel leak first. Look for obvious external leaks around the injectors and the fuel lines. Do you mean the shifter is hard to move from gear to gear or that the car bangs into gear? That could be a bad motor mount or mounts causing the banging feeling. The surging in gear. Is the check engine light on? Again look for broken vacuum lines or any other vacuum leak on the engine
