Ford Taurus gear shift problem

I own a 2000 Ford Taurus. I attempted to leave home and got in my car to leave. When I started the car and put it in gear, it didn't grab any gear at all. The gear shift went from park to D. It would not catch on any gear, not even Nuetral. Can you help?

Sounds like possibly a snapped cable? Did it drive and shift ok up till now? Open the hood, as you run thru the gears have someone look at the right side of the engine, you will see thr tranny there, have them observe the shft lever for movement. No movement=broken cable movemnet= tranny problem.
