97 Taurus Idle Fluctuates

3.0, 106,000 miles. New wires, plugs, fuel pump.

When at idle in park, idle moves up and down from just under 1000 to a little above 1000. I'm guessing from about 800 or 900 to about 1100 and back again. Moves up and down continuously at a steady pattern.

When in drive, and after driving it awhile, it idles smooth unless you set for about 2-3 minutes in drive with the brake on. It will then start moving around slightly and almost stalls at times.

Check replace or clean IAC and or MAF. If you unplug the MAF does it resolve?

Merlin, thanks for the reply.

I had already cleaned the MAF with alcohol and a swab. I even took the IAC off and sprayed it with electronic parts cleaner.

I unplugged the MAF and the engine dropped in idle and became very rough. The up and down idle was still there though. Went back to the way it was when it was plugged back in.

I then unplugged the IAC and the engine almost died. Went back when it was plugged back in.

Here's the confusing one. I unplugged the TPS and there wasn't any change at all. Not even a small one. Nothing different happened when it was plugged back in.

Been waiting a long time here.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this issue may be?

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be three PCV hoses, each costing $10 - $15. Start there, and you may save some money.
