2000 Ford Taurus

I am trying to replace the antenna that was broken off near the base. Online searches have not given me enough detail on how to get the old antenna out. I assume it is held in place by a nut or something underneath in the trunk, but it is behind a metal panel and you can't really see behind it, there is no room to get your head in there.

Look at the base of the antenna on the outside of car you should see a round washer type nut it has slots in it you have to unscrew this if it is turning you have to hold it inside with vise grips use a mirror and flash light to look in blind spot

Thanks for answering. I had tried to remove that outside washer, but couldn't figure out how. It does not turn at all. It has 4 slots but they are not very deep. I tried using needlenose pliers to grip 2 of them but it diesn't move and then slips out when trying to turn. Any ideas of how to loosen it? I suppose there is some special tool that mechanics have that fits in all 4 slots at once.
