I just bought a 1998 ford taurus. I had a mechanic look it over and he said it needed the sway bar and a tune up was all it needed. I then took it to a another place to get an oil change and they told me that the ball joints/tie rods were needing to be replaced.

The car drives smooth, there is no play in the steering wheel or uneven wear in the tires. Can I tell just from driving if they are bad? I had the sway bar issue repaired by the first mechanic. The car has 126,000 miles on it.

Hi there,
This will depend on the degree of wear in the units, I would go get a second opinion, just to be safe.

I have had the car looked at by 4 different people. Place A was the mechanic who said it just needed the sway bar bushing replaced and a tune up, the next place did the oil change and told me they could use replacing. The third place I asked them to check the brakes and they also came back saying they have wear and tear on them for a car with that milage but are not dangerous and the fourth place said I was a death trap waiting to happen. Wouldn't you feel a problem in driving it if they were that bad?

Hi there,

What price saftey. There is obviously a problem there just the degree is being debated, get them done then you know you are safe, rather than risk a major steering or suspension failure while driving.
