I have a '95 taurus, auto transmission. My son decided that since the car wouldn't shift out of park, he would pull on the shifter until it broke. The shifter is located on the steering column. Is this something I can change myself or do I need to bring it to a Mech. I do small repairs on my cars----ie; brakes, oil change, etc. Also would need the proper part name if anyone knows it. Thanks

The shifter is held in by a small detented ball spring. Some have a drive pin. Go to a salvage yard and see if you can get one. If not buy a new one. You should be able to put in on. There might be a problem with the solonid that is actuated by the brake pedal. It releases the shift lever. Also--ground your son! Good luck
