My 1994 Ford Ranger, 2.3L 5spd man 4X4 85,000 miles will idle high, 5000 - 6000 rpms, at times while driving, coasting and while not moving at all. I tried pulling up on the gas pedal when this happens, reving the engine and neither helps.

Locate Idle air control valve and peck on it during erratic idle. If it idles down replace and also perform or have someone perform a fuel system service to remove carbon deposits.

Air in the cooling system can cause a surging of the engine. Check the intake manifold or manifold gasket for a leak that adds extra air to the system and confuses the computer.
