1997 Ford Ranger 4x4 3.0 liter engine, 120,000 miles. The front axle universal joints are shot and need replacement. The passenger side has 2 joints; the driver side has 1. According to both the Chilton and Haynes manuals, you should be able to remove the spindle and pull the axle through the steering knuckle. I've tore it down to the spindle, and don't believe the hole in the knucle is large enough for the u-joint shackles to pass through. I'm wondering what is the correct method for removing the axles, as the manuals seem incorrect.
