My ford ranger started getting poor gas milage in the last few months ( 10 to the gallon city when it used to get 18-19). It took a couple of months for the check engine light to come on. I took it in and they changed the oxygen sensor, since then the symptoms haven't changed at all, except no check engine light now and it has been a few months again. I have changed the: fuel filter, air filter, oil, spark plugs, and reduced the weight in the truck and it hasn't helped. The others symptoms are that the transmission has been slipping, only when first accelerating, for years now, so that is nothing new and the fluid looks good anyway. The only matenance beyond regular stuff has been: a power steering pump replaced in '06, a shift control solenoid replaced in '06, and then the oxygen sensor I spoke of. I have asked the same mechanics and others for more advice and they seem to think there is nothing wrong because there is no check engine light. In the mean time I still get half the mpg I should be getting as new symptoms. Is there be something else wrong and should the light come on? Could it be due to the transmission even though these are new symptoms? Is there anything else I can do?
