Electrical problem
1999 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Auto 100000 miles

It seems my starter kicks in while I am driving. Not all the time, when ever it wants. At least I think thats what it is. It starts with a small pop hissing sound followed by interuption of the electrical system. After a couple of times of that the grinding noise begins. Very loud. When I shut the engine off, you can hear something winding down. It maybe do this again upon starting the engine then maybe not. Days later, sometimes a week it will start again. The starter has been replaced once. The sound comes from directly under the starter area. I think it has to be something electrical since two starters are doing the same thing. The first starter was completly shot. I did notice at night if this happened it would flicker the head lights. Help!

Suspect faulty ignition switch. Faulty switch will allow starter to stay engaged even without key, which will burn through a starter in no time.
