1993 Ford Ranger Replacing the distibutor

1993 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

My sons truck had striped some gears on the distributor. After buying a replacement distributor and placeing it in. Or course the timeing was off. After removing and replaceing it several times was able to get it running enoough to get it home. Is there a way to time the motor without having to pull and rebuilt the whole thing. Please advise.

Put the engine no.1 piston on its compression stroke/TDC then line the crankshaft pulley timing marks/scale to zero degree-install the distributor making sure the rotor is pointing to the no.1 cap tower then follow the firing order rotation-then adjust the ignition timing
