1989 Ford Ranger Temperture Gauge

My temperture gauge on my Ford Ranger pickup is not working. Where do I start in figuring out what the problem is?

I would take a test light and make sure it is getting juice, check the ground and then test the temp sending unit make sure it has juice. If all that checks out ok then change the sending unit usually pretty cheap if thats it. Only other thing could be the gauge itself.
