Problem is with the gear shift?

My son has a 1980 with 72,000 original miles and it has a manual tranny.
Problem is with the gear shift. There are two little parts that hold it IN gear that the sides have broken and it slips out of gear. He has to get under the car and put it in gear so needless to say he can not drive the car and we really, really need him to have a car to drive.

Any help would just be so great as he can not afford to take it to the dealer to have them tell him what part he needs or if anything can be done.

Thanks a ton!

Hey Sindy,

You may have a problem getting parts for it regardless of the problem. The dealer is only required to have parts available for 10 years.

You may need to do some searching through junkyeard or e-bay for a shifter.

Or find a machinist that can fabricate something.

Does this mean he is probably going to need a whole new gear shifter? I just located another horizon about 300 miles away at a junk yard and we are more then willing to go and get the shifter because he loves his little car. Plus we do have a guy here in town that does a ton of fabricating but we just need to know the name of the part or if he needs a new shifter.

Thanks so much for the quick help.

Well, without seeing it, I don't know what he needs. Wven if I saw it I don't know that I could necessarily name it.

What I suggest is to take a picture of what you have/need and send it to the place that has the shifter. I'm sure they have an e-mail to see what you have and they can ups it to you. You can post a pic here, but I don't know that I can help, but maybe someone else here can.

Sindy, the Plymouth Horizon, Plymouth Scamp and Dodge Omni were designed by Chrysler France, feature Simca engines from France and sold under the Talbot brand there. I know the two clips and the "Talbot Simca Matra Chrysler UK" forum has access to those parts for peanuts. Just join and make your post and someone will chime in. What you are seeking are 2 each cable clips for a Talbot Horizon with 5 speed manual transmission. The parts can get to you in 5 working days express and 10 days regular mail. Any interior Horizon parts are available there as well. The engines were much smaller, so there are few bits in common. These cars were not made for very long and ultimately, Peugeot took over Talbot from Chrysler and those names were retired. The Peugeot Museum Parts Store does offer some Talbot Horizon parts, but I need time to check for you. -Rob
