I have a 1992 Ford Mustang with a rebuilt 5.0 with a manual transmission with 1000 miles on the motor. When I start the car, the bendix on the starter seems to be making contact with the flywheel for a brief moment after the engine starts. I have tried several different starters. I also tried to place a spacer on the starter. I removed the ignition switch and lubricated the moving parts and checked the tension on the spring. I made sure that the battery is fully charged and replaced the starter solenoid. Got any ideas?

Did you buy the car new? Some of those had a replaceable toothed ring on the flywheel. If it was installed a little off it could cause what you are describing. Did this start all of the sudden or has it always done this?

I bought the car used a few months ago. It has done this since I have owned it. I noticed the other day that if you "help" the ignition turn back counter clockwise as soon as then engine starts, the problem seems better and most of the time it will not have the noise as described earlier.

Thenm it could be the electrical part of theignition switch hanging up a little. It is located on top of the steering column about 2/3 of the way down. Have seen alot of those switch's fail, but they usually just fall apart
