2006 Ford Focus Power Steering Noise

My Focus has started making a noise when turning. The noise is a growling like when the power steering pump is low on fluid. My fluid level is good. The strange thing is that this loud noise comes and goes. One day it is loud and sounds as if the pump is failing, and the next day it is quiet. Any ideas as to how this could happen?

I have the same problem. But it only happens in the cold, and after I have accelerated hard right after starting (when the engine is real cold). The power steering groans, there seems to be an odor, and my mileage gets whacked. If I shut off the car for a moment, the problem is still there. If I let it sit for a while, the problem goes away. Have you got any answers on this yet?
