In the last day the car has cut out four times when I am in traffic or going slow. The battery light then comes and on. On one occasion so did the oil light. (This is well toped up). I have noticed a large amount of white powder in the centre of the baterry don't know if this is the cause. Would appreciate any advice on cause.

Clean all white powder off battery. Including removing and cleaning terminals and replacing securely. Use a voltmeter while engine is running put meter red to battery plus and meter black to battery negative. You should get a reading of between 13/14 volts. If you get less than 13 your alternator is not working correctly. Check all the wiring to alternator. Put meter red probe wire to alernator B+ terminal and meter black probe to battery negative. Again you should get 13/14 volts. If less than this replace alternator?
