1989 Ford Festiva 5th gear

The last time this was drove about 2 weeks before it went in to 5th gear but tonight it will not how can I get it to go in to 5th

Will the box select 5th with the engine off?

First thing to do is check the selector cables are OK, check the gear box oil for metal fragments as well.
