It's been shifting roughly when under heavy acceleration. Ford place says I need it completely rebuilt. Quoted $3,300 which will come with a 12.000 mile one year warranty. 2 questions:

Is the price reasonable?

Should I consider trying to find a used one in a wreck or something?

Problem with salvage yard stuf is that you dont know how it was treated. You may be buying something worse than what you have. The price is fairly reasonable for a dealer and you will get a warranty good at any Ford dealer anywhere. Something to consider. Salvage parts have a 90 day warranty usually

My ford service rep called me back and said she'd twisted the parts guys arm and got me a Remanufactured Ford Tranny for $3,150. 3 Year, 100,000 mile warranty and cheaper than the rebuild. I took her up on it.

Hate to put that much money into a 1999 vehicle, but it IS paid for, and a diesel with only 100,000 miles on it. Should go another 100 easy if not more, right?

Oh yeah, especially a 7.3. Those are great engines, in my opinion the last good one Ford put out. That is a good deal
