What if the ignition switch was changed and the starter still tries to engage when the engine is running. A lot of the time the engine won't even start I just luck out when I try some times but it doesn't always work.

If the engine tries to start when the truck is running you somehow are getting juice to the starter solinoid. If you try to start it and you have nothiing but once in as while it turns over and starts tell me there is a problem in the starter. Have it checked out.
