I just had this sensor replaced, and now the engine hesitates as the rpm increases as I increase speed from a stop. It hesitates, speeds up, hesitates again, etc., until I achieve faster speed or push the pedal to drop to a lower gear. after that there is no hesitation.

Can this be the fault of the mass air flow sensor?

yes it is very likely there is a issue with the MAF sensor. either it was replaced backwards, as in example, the flow arrows staped on the sensor are not facing the proper way and it wont work. or the sensor that was put it was faulty.
