It seems like there's alot of play in the differential. When I take off from a stoplight or shift to reverse there's a jerk, it's been like this for a while. Now when I take off making a left turn I can here a cracking noise in the rear. What could be the problem?

The u-joints are fine, but there's in and out play in the rear axles, at least 1/4"-1/2". Is this normal?

I would say it shouldn't be more tha 1/8". If it is 1/2", that is too much.

It sounds like general wear in the differential. I believe they can be shimmed.
