1991 Ford F-150 not staying crunk

Ran out of gas I thought because gage is broken. So I when and got gas but I began to run but erratic sputtering. I then change the fuel filter and listen to hear the fuel pump engage and it did but still not staying on. Any suggestion on what it could be!

Chances are your fuel pump is no good, its a good way to kill it by running out the tank of gas.
