1997 Ford Explorer GETTING IN GEAR

My explorer has the safety that you have to have foot on brake to engage in gear. Lately I have been having problems with this. I have to pump the brake several times when it is cold just to engage in reverse or drive. What could be causing this is my question.

If it eventually does work, it could very well be the shift lockout solenoid is sticking or that the column has a problem and wont let the lock out or the shifter move properly, have seen both. Might want to remove lower plastic cover under column and get a flashlight so you can watch the solenoid work to see if it is just sticking
