1997 Ford Explorer door latch issue

I have a 1997 Ford Explorer AWD V8 with 157718 miles. The rear interior door handles will not open the doors. I have replaced the handle itself, which was broken. Now, the latch still will not release leaving the door unable to open from the inside. I have checked to be sure the child-safety lock is not engaged. Also, the rod does not seem to be bent. What else could be causing this issue?

Try getting some brakekleen and spray white grease, spray liberaly the catch 4-5 times opening and closing from the outside. Then aply a liberal coat of grease. It has to be an issue of binding someplace in the mechanism!
