It takes for ever to go into to drive and it is really making me mad?

I had a similar problem when I first got my 93 explorer. Turns out the previous owner hadn't flushed the transmission fluid in about five years. Luckily the flush seemed to take care of the problem, which is relatively cheap compared to a new transimission.
