Electrical problem
1992 Ford Explorer V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

we were travelling home and the battery wasn't being charged and the car eventually died. Changed the alternator but made a mistake while reconnecting the battery cables. Positive was done before the negative. It was sparking and there was some smoke but don't know what it was. Now the engine will turn over but will not start. Plus the wipers stay on.

Is it possible cables where connected backwards? If so go for professional help. If not see if big red wire on alt is touching block.
